Monty Monitor

How do I use the Monitor with my compost?

To use Monty Monitor, all you need to do is charge it for 2-4 hours and set up your Monty Mobile account while in range of the Monitor, at which point it should connect. You can then take it to your compost for monitoring by simply pushing it into the middle of the top of your heap and leaving it there. Every time you connect again, the data it has collected will be uploaded to your account and analysed for health insights.

What sensors does my Monitor have?

The current version of Monty Monitor has three sensors that together measure temperature, humidity, air pressure, air quality and volatile organic compounds.

How long will my Monitor battery last?

With one to two daily connections, your Monitor should last around a month before it needs to be charged again. Any more or less than this will relatively affect the charging requirements.

How do I know when I need to charge my Monitor?

Upon connection, if your Monitor drops below 10%, an icon prompting you to charge it will appear in the top left corner of the Dashboard screen. If you ignore it and leave your Monitor without charging for too long, it will stop connecting and will need to be charged before you can connect again.

How do I charge my Monitor?

Monty Monitor charges wirelessly so all that is required is to place the Monitor on the charging pad. Successful charging will result in a yellow light on the top point of the Monitor and small solid blue light on the side of the charging pad opposite the cable port. Unsuccessful charging will result in either no light or a flashing blue light emitted from the side of the charger opposite the cable port.

How do I connect to my Monitor?

When you first unbox your Monty Monitor, you should immediately charge it for 2-4 hours to ensure it has full battery. After this, remove the Monitor from charge, download the Monty Mobile app and create an account. The last step in the account creation will ask if you want to connect to a Monitor - select yes and you will be taken to a syncing screen that will automatically pair with your Monitor. If your mobile's Bluetooth is switched off, you will be prompted to switch it on.

My Monitor isn't connecting - what do I do?

Your Monitor may not be connecting for a number of reasons so Monty Mobile has an in-built troubleshooter to help you reconnect. In the top right corner of the Dashboard screen, select the Alert triangle icon and you will be directed to a series of screens to help identify your problem. Prior to doing this, first attempt to simply restart the app and switch your Bluetooth off and on.

What is the range with my Monitor?

Our Bluetooth protocol can technically reach up to a kilometre with clear line of site! However it is very rare that this is the case and any materials in between the Monitor and your connecting phone will reduce this distance. For an outdoor compost bin, you maybe able to reach it from within a close building but for the best connection, try to get within 20 metres.

How do I clean my Monitor?

Your Monitor does not need to be clean to monitor or be charged but if you would like to for whatever reason start with wiping it down with a dry paper towel, being careful around and inside the sensor inlet. If it still has debris, twist the stem off the Monitor head to separate the two parts. The stem can be cleaned under running warm water however a wet wipe or washer should be used on the head to avoid excessive water exposure.

Is the Monitor waterproof?

It is more appropriate to say the Monitor is splash-proof - it can stay outdoors in your compost or in the rain with no issues but avoid submerging it in any water or subjecting it to heavy washing.

How long until my Monitor stops working?

While we have made every endeavour to make Monty as robust, durable and longlasting as possible, the fact remains that it is a completely new, sensitive electronic device. We are confident that when following the User Guide and best practises, Monty Monitor will last for over a year however we currently face some uncertainties beyond there regarding the individual sensors' and the battery's lifetime expectancy. These issues are localised to the Monitor head and we are exploring ways to mitigate and mange them. The stem on the otherhand is infinitely functional and should not experience any issues that will ever impair its use, barring potential minor warping over time.

Is the Monitor made of recycled material?

Unfortunately no parts in Monty Monitor are currently made of recycled materials, as we had to prioritise durability and ability to function in hot, acidic temperatures in our material selection. In future releases, we are very keen to explore changing this however.

Is the wireless charger made of recycled material?

Fortunately yes! In the selection of our charger, we managed to find an option that not only used fully recycled ABS plastic but also used a portion of wheat fibres in the casing instead of petroleum-based plastics.

Is the wireless charger recyclable?

Similarly to the Monty Monitor, if you have any issues with the wireless charger, simply let us know and we will provide pre-paid return shipping so you can return it to us for proper recycling.

I am outside of Australia - can I buy a Monty Monitor?

Yes - we are now officially shipping limited stock outside Australia! Currently our store only allows for purchases from Australia and the US but if you're from a different country, send us a message and we'll get a special order set up for you.

Where can I find my charger?

In order to minimise packaging, we store the charger inside the main Monty Monitor packaging! Simply pull out the insert supporting the stem and the charging pad box and the charging cable box will be inside. To note: the insert is fit very snug so don't worry if you have to use some force to pull it out.

My Monitor isn't charging - what do I do?

When it comes time to charge your Monitor, you may experience some issues - unfortunately, a small number of chargers have been found to be weaker in capacity and therefore require a few additional steps to set up.

Firstly, ensure the charger is plugged into a single socket wall adapter, as opposed to a multi-socket board or computer socket charger. Only direct charging from the wall will provide enough current for the wireless charging to our Monitor.

Secondly, ensure the Monitor module is directly centred on the charging pad, as opposed to off to the side, otherwise the charging components will not be properly lined up.

Once correctly plugged in and aligned, after a few seconds, either a yellow or purple light will come on, indicating successful charging. If this does not occur, try rotating the Monitor on the charger to better position it.

If there is still no light a final step is as follows. Using a wireless charging enabled smartphone, place the phone on the charger. Once it starts charging, quickly remove the phone and replace with the monitor. This should work as the stronger phone signal is able to establish the charging connection.

After these steps, if you are still unable to charge your Monitor, please let us know directly.

Weekly Waste Set-Up

Why do you need to know my home type?

The type of home you compost in says a lot about the type of waste you're able to regularly add to your compost. This helps us further customise your Monty experience and define your Weekly Waste.

Why do you need to know who contributes to my compost?

The age and amount of people who contribute to your compost says a lot about the type of waste you're able to regularly add to your compost. This helps us further customise your Monty experience and define your Weekly Waste.

What are the types of waste?

We've defined the following six waste types as the most commonly composted. Select whichever makes up the majority of your composted waste depending on which category it falls into.

  • Food scraps: Anything from the kitchen or from a consumable.
  • Fresh greens: Anything from the garden that has recently been growing.
  • Paper recycle: Waste like paper, cardboard and tissues.
  • Dried greens: Anything from the garden that has dried out.
  • Woody waste: Solid and fibrous wood-based waste.
  • Water: Added water or water-based liquid.

How do I know my waste amounts?

Based on your previous answers, we calculate an approximation of each waste type that you select. If you would like to adjust it, we've provided a number of different quantity options that allow you to slide across to set the actual amount you waste.

Compost Profile

Why do I need to tell you my postcode?

We use local weather data to improve our analysis based on how it impacts your compost but to do so, we need to know the postcode that your compost is situated in. Currently we are only set up for Australian postcodes so if you're located outside Australia, please get in touch to let us know.

What is my compost set-up type?

We've defined six different compost set-up types that best represent the majority of piles. Pick whichever sounds most similar to yours to define the start of your Compost Profile.

Why do I need to tell you my compost dimensions?

Knowing how big your compost can get is important in providing our custom management instructions. The dimensions you input do not need to be completely accurate - an estimation based on sight is enough for our purposes.

Why do I need to tell you whether my compost has a cover?

A cover can make a big difference in the decomposition process of your composting and can affect what management instructions we provide. If the type of cover you use isn't listed, simply pick whichever is most similar.

Why do I need to tell you how full my compost is?

This helps tell us what your compost has been doing before you set it up with Monty. How full your compost is, along with other information, will indicate its rate of decomposition, quality and a number of other factors.

Why do I need to tell you how old my compost is?

This helps tell us what your compost has been doing before you set it up with Monty. How old your compost is, along with other information, will indicate its rate of decomposition, quality and a number of other factors.

What kind of compost is Monty compatible with?

Both Monty Monitor and Monty Mobile are intended for use with piles equal to or less than 1 cubic metre in any kind of set-up type, from a tumbler to an enclosed bin to an open pile. Unfortunately for piles bigger than this, our analysis of a Monty Monitor's data will not be as accurate however this is a functionality we definitely want to add in future. You will also still be able to see the direct readings taken from the Monitor for insights into its ongoing temperature and gas emissions.

Dashboard

What is the Monty Dashboard?

The Monty Dashboard is the main landing page of the entire Monty Mobile app, representing a snapshot of your compost's current state. It contains a number of key features, including the Account Settings, Health Icons and Notifications, your Compost Profile and access to the Waste and Water Log.

What is my compost's Moisture Content?

Based on your Compost Profile, we calculate your compost's approximate Moisture Content, meaning the percentage of your compost that is water. Long-press on the icon for a quick summary of where your moisture should be sitting.

What is my compost's C:N Balance?

Based on your Compost Profile, we calculate your compost's approximate C:N Balance, meaning the ratio of carbon to nitrogen parts in your composting material. Long-press on the icon for a quick summary of where your c:n should be sitting.

What is my compost's Oxygen Level?

Based on your Compost Profile, we calculate your compost's approximate Oxygen Level, meaning the percentage of oxygen in the air circulating through your compost. Long-press on the icon for a quick summary of where your oxygen should be sitting.

How do I create a Compost Profile?

Tap on the green add button below the Health Icons to create your first Compost Profile. We ask you a series of questions describing how your compost operates and based on your answers, generate a unique profile of your pile to customise our app to your composting'. Don't worry if you get anything wrong, you can always edit it later in your Account page.

How do I track my composted waste?

We track your waste in two main ways. First is your Weekly Waste profile, which you will be prompted to set up in the Monty Dashboard when you set-up your account. Second is with the Waste and Water Log, accessed through the "Log Waste and Water" button. You can also access all your previously composted waste through the "Completed" button.

What are my Health Notifications?

Based on your calculated Health Icons, we generate customised instructions to help manage your compost. These will be in the form of simple actions, such as adding water or turning it over. Once you have completed an action, select the blue circle to tick it off and dismiss it.

How do I give feedback on my experience?

We've made it easier than ever to give feedback on specific features or your overall app experience. Simply add in your thoughts in the feedback form, send them through and we'll get on integrating them into our development plan.

Why can't I see my Monitor data?

The historical data from your Monty Monitor (if you have one) can be accessed by tapping the Monitor icon on the Dashboard. The Monitor status screen will then show you graphs of the previous 7 days of both your compost's temperature and gas levels. These graphs may be blank for two reasons.

Firstly, the graph currently only appears after the first 7 days of data has been collected. We have a fix in the works for this so you will be able to see it instantly and see multiple views, including a 24 hour data breakdown.

Secondly, your account may not have been fully set up so data hasn't started being sent from your Monitor. Make sure you do this by creating a heap, setting up your weekly waste and ensuring your Monitor is connected.

Log Waste

What is the Monty Waste and Water Log

You can easily keep track of the waste you add to your compost with our Waste and Water Log. Simply select the waste type and you'll be directed to input its quantity. This helps us stay on top of the content of your compost and how to feed it better in future.

What kind of waste can I log?

Our waste database contains dozens of different types of waste grouped into a number of key categories. You can choose from either one of six top level waste categories or any of the individual items.

How do I pick the waste and water I want to log?

To pick one of the top level waste categories, tap anywhere on the relevant icon. To pick one of the individual waste items, tap anywhere on the item list entry.

How do I search the Waste and Water Log?

Simply type in the term you would like to search for in our waste database and it will search to see whether it is available. If not, pick the top level waste category it belongs to and send us an item request in the feedback form.

How do I log waste and water?

To log any waste or water that you've added to your compost, simply select the correct items and press next. You'll be directed to a screen where you can input and confirm the amounts of each. Note that you don't need to be 100% accurate - as long as it's the approximate amount, that is acceptable.

Games

What are the Monty Mobile Games?

The Monty Mobile Games is an aggregation of all the composting activity you've done with Monty to date. The two main sections, your achievements and leaderboards, progress over time to show how committed to engaging and connecting your compost you've been.

What are the Monty Achievements?

The Monty Achievements are one-off wins you've made using your Monty, showing all the different areas that you've excelled in at managing your compost. Greyed out Achievements are ones that you have yet to unlock. You can view the details of each Achievement, whether unlock or not, by clicking on it. Some are exclusive to Monty Monitor users so unless you have connected to one, you won't be able to unlock them.

What are the Monty Leaderboards?

The Monty Leaderboards show where you sit amongst all the other Monty Mobile users. There are two main rankings, the quantity of waste reported and the amount of weeks consistently using Monty. If you're tied with another user, you'll both sit at the same ranking number.

Conservatory

How can I manage my Compost Batches?

Once you're finished with a compost batch, you can easily start over on a new one here. This maintains the rest of your Compost Profile information but will reset all your current health and waste information.

How can I edit my Weekly Waste?

You can easily change your Weekly Waste here, which will take you through the same steps when you first set it up. This will change all Weekly Waste entries moving forward.

I reset my password but still can't log in - what do I do?

This was a common issue due to an earlier version of our app not being compatible with the current version so, if you're experiencing it, the solution is simply to update to the latest version! Also important is that some mobile devices will cache previous passwords so it is best to fully delete the app and then reinstall it. Don't worry - you won't lose your compost or account data in the process.
