Setting a sustainable New Year’s resolution can be a great way to live more positively this year. But keeping the resolution can be hard especially when goals like, “be more eco-friendly” can be huge and vague.
That’s why the best way to accomplish your goals is to start small and make them achievable. By identifying small areas for improvement - it can help set us up for a greener future.
To get you started, we've put together a list of realistic eco-friendly practices to kickstart 2024.
1. Swap one disposable product for a reusable alternative
Find yourself using single-use makeup wipes, razors or cotton pads? Swap one of these for a reusable alternative. Not only will it reduce the amount of disposables ending up in landfill, but it'll also save you money.
2. Repair
Save clothes from heading to the landfill by mending them - this will make them last longer, reduce waste and save you money from buying new clothes!
3. Look for ethically produced and fair trade gifts
Help support ethical working conditions and local craft by opting for fair trade gifts.
4. Use a reusable shopping bag
Ditch the single use plastic bags and save money by opting for a reusable bag. What’s great is that you can swap out those plain bags for a cute print that’s your style. Here’s our favourite reusable bag.
5. Catch public transport once a week
Minimise car pollution by catching the bus, ferry or train once a week. You may end up enjoying the change of scenery!
6. Use as much natural light as possible
Did you know that increased sunlight heightens the brain's production of the mood-enhancing chemical serotonin. That’s what we call a win-win situation, saving the planet and improving your mood!
7. Clear out your closet carefully
If you're getting rid of old clothes, make sure any pieces that can still be worn are getting donated.
8. Use your phone, tablet or laptop for note-taking
Go paperless with your notes and write digital notes instead!
9. Bring a reusable mug
When you’re heading out for a coffee date, make sure to bring your own mug! Most cafes will give you a discount for doing so.
10. Shop second-hand
Need to buy a vacuum, saucepan or chair? Head to marketplaces like Facebook to shop second hand! You'll score some amazing deals on there.
